Paxil Uses

Paxil is an antidepressant and is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and generalized anxiety disorder.

Paxil may also been used to treat a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder- PMDD), sexual function problems in men (premature ejaculation), nerve problems associated with diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), chronic headaches, or post-traumatic stress disorder.

How to use Paxil antidepressant

Take Paxil by mouth, it is usually taken once daily in the morning or as directed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food.

It is important to continue taking Paxil or as directed by your doctors as prescribed even if you feel well.

Do not stop taking Paxil or as directed by your doctors without consulting your doctor first.

It may take up to several weeks before the full benefits of taking Paxil are felt.

Paxil Antidepressant Side effects

If, while taking Paxil antidepressants, you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking paxil and contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); an irregular heartbeat or pulse; low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness); high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); unusual bleeding or bruising; or fever or chills. Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur.

Continue to take Paxil be sure to talk to your doctor if you experience headache; tremor, nervousness, or anxiety; nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight; sleepiness or insomnia; or decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur while taking paxil. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Precautions

Do not take Paxil antidepressant if you have kidney or liver disorders or are currently taking or have stopped taking within the last 14 days taking MAO inhibitors.

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Paxil may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness then avoid these activities. Alcohol may increase drowsiness or dizziness.

Drug Interactions

Certain medications taken with Paxil antidepressants could result in serious, even fatal, drug interactions. Avoid taking MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks, and avoid taking thioridazine within 5 weeks, before or after treatment with this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.

Paxil antidepressant is not recommended for use with: weight loss drugs (e.g., sibutramine, phentermine), thioridazine, terfenadine, astemizole. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: other SSRI antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, fluoxetine), nefazodone, trazodone, tramadol, venlafaxine, "triptan" migraine drugs (e.g., sumatriptan, zolmitriptan), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, nortriptyline), cimetidine, digoxin, flecainide, propafenone, clozapine, lithium, tryptophan, "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), theophylline, herbal/natural products (e.g., melatonin, ayahuasca, St John's wort). Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti- anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine). Report other drugs which affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), such as: dofetilide, pimozide, sotalol, quinidine, procainamide, sparfloxacin, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide). Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Paxil Overdose

If a Paxil antidepressant overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. The symptoms of an overdose of Paxil antidepressants may include: irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe dizziness or lightheadedness.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Paxil antidepressant. take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of Paxil antidepressants unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Paxil Storage

Paxil antidepressant should be stored at room temperature. Keep away from moisture and heat.
