Remeron Antidepressant Uses

Unlike selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil etc. Remeron antidepressant works to increase the release of two neurotransmitters in the brain, noradrenaline, and serotonin, rather than one. This targetting of 2 receptors results in less side effects such as dizziness, constipation, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, agitation, anxiety and nausea than other antidepressants.

Taking Remeron

The usual starting dose for Remeron is 15 mg once daily, usually taken at bed time. Remeron antidepressants may be taken with or without food.

Remeron can be taken with food or milk if a stomach upset occurs.

It is important to take Remeron exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take Remeron antidepressants more often than prescribed. Symptoms will begin to improve within 7 to 10 days. However, it may take 3 to 4 weeks for the full benefits of Remeron to become apparent.

Remeron Antidepressant Side Effects

Side effects resulting from taking Remeron antidepressants can include dry mouth, day time sleepiness, which usually subsides rapidly after the first week. It is also possible that you may experience an increased appetite and gain weight.

Remeron antidepressant may increase blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Precautions

Do not take Remeron antidepressants if you are currently taking, or have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOAIs) within the past 14 days. Consult with your doctor before you begin treatment with Remeron.

You may not be able to take Remeron antidepressants if you have liver disease, kidney disease, manic-depressive disorder, blood problems, high or low blood pressure, heart disease, or suffer from seizures.

Bone marrow depression, usually presenting as granulocytopenia or agranulocytosis, has been reported during treatment. The symptoms mostly appear after 2 - 6 weeks of treatment. The bone marrow depression is generally reversible on termination of treatment with Remeron. Reversible agranulocytosis has been reported as a rare occurence in cinical trials. Patients should therefore be alert for symptoms such as fever, sore throat, stomatitis, and other signs of infection. If such symptoms occur treatment should be stopped and blood counts taken.

It is not known if Remeron antidepressant is secreted in breast milk.

Do not share Remeron with others for whom it was not prescribed.

Drug Interactions

When taking Remeron antidepressant use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol and taking other medicines that cause drowsiness, (eg, sleeping pills, antihistamines).

Because of the possibility of developing increased body temperature (hyperpyrexia), high blood pressure, or seizures, the use of Remeron is not recommended together with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO's), such as furazolidone (Furoxone), phenelzine (Nardil), procarbazine (Matulane), selegiline (Carbex), or tranylcypromine (Parnate).

An interval of 14 days is recommended between stopping MAOI therapy and starting Remeron antidepressants and vice versa.

Remeron Antidepressant Overdose

If a Rmeron antidepressant overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Remeron Storage

Store Remeron antidepressants at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F).
