How to use Zoloft

Take Zoloft antidepressants exactly as directed by your doctor.

Take each Zoloft tablet with water. Try to take at the same time each day.

Zoloft antidepressants may be taken with or without food.

Do not stop taking Zoloft antidepressant without first talking to your doctor.

The time it takes for you to feel the benefits of Zoloft is different for everyone. You may start to feel better within 2 to 4 weeks, or it may take 6 to 8 weeks. If you don't feel better right away, it's important to keep taking Zoloft antidepressant as directed.

Side Effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Zoloft and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); an irregular heartbeat or pulse; low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness); high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); or chills or fever.

If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking your Zoloft antidepressants and talk to your doctor: headache; tremor, nervousness, or anxiety; nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight; sleepiness or insomnia; or decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

You may experience unpleasant side effects if you stop taking Zoloft suddenly.

Precautions

Do not take Zoloft antidepressants if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) during the last 2 weeks. Serious, and sometimes fatal, reactions have occurred when these medicines have been used together. Before taking Zoloft, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, have kidney disease, suffer from seizures, or suffer from mania or have suicidal thoughts. You may not be able to take Zoloft antidepressants, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Zoloft is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is unknown whether it will harm an unborn baby. Do not take Zoloft without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Zoloft antidepressant passes into breast milk. Do not take Zoloft without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Zoloft may give rise to dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness then avoid these activities. Alcohol may increase drowsiness or dizziness while you are taking Zoloft, so use alcohol cautiously.

Do not share your Zoloft antidepressant with others for whom it was not prescribed.

Drug Interactions

Certain medications taken with Zoloft antidepressants could result in serious, even fatal, drug interactions. Avoid taking MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks before or after treatment with Zoloft antidepressant. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information. Zoloft is not recommended for use with: weight loss drugs (e.g., sibutramine, phentermine), terfenadine, astemizole. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: other SSRI antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, fluoxetine), nefazodone, venlafaxine, "triptan" migraine drugs (e.g., sumatriptan, zolmitriptan), tramadol, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, nortriptyline), cimetidine, flecainide, propafenone, clozapine, trazodone, lithium, tryptophan, "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), any herbal/natural products (e.g., melatonin, St John's wort, ayahuasca). Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti- anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine). Report other drugs which affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), such as: dofetilide, pimozide, sotalol, quinidine, procainamide, sparfloxacin, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide). Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Do not start or stop Zoloft antidepressants or any medicine without your doctor or pharmacists approval.

Zoloft Antidepressant Overdose

If an overdose of Zoloft antidepressants is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of Zoloft antidepressant overdose may include: irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe dizziness or lightheadedness.

Missed Zoloft dose

If a dose of Zoloft is missed, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of Zoloft antidepressant unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Store Zoloft antidepressants at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Keep away from light and moisture.
